It is stated that a general store is about to be established at Yogeltown by Mr Brown, of that rising suburb. A branch post office is also Bpoken of.
The Waimate Witness says: —" Tho inhabitants of Opunake appear to bo al <vays quarrelling among themselves. Now that the forming of the County Council has been disposed of, they must need obtain another butt to operate upon, and in the matter of the appointment of a new schoolmaster, they have secured a fresh outlet for their factionavy feelings. This action was strongly condemaed by auother section, which rolled up in strong force at the election of tho school oommittee, and succeeded in '• bumping " the old party out, getting in its own men. . . There a-e some highly diverting sidelights to tho affair. If preserve!, they would furnish Gilbert and hullivan good material for a splendid cimic opera." shop. In the annual estimates for the Borough to be conside-ed on Monlay next, it is proposed to increase the Mayoral honorarium to £IOO, being-double the amount he etofore voted. An addition of ano her £SO to the Town Clerk is also voted. We regret to laarn that Mr L. Webster, of sprinting fame, met with an aocident while cutting wood, resulting in a gash in the right foot, some of the tendrons being severe!, but fortunately no bones being injured, 'lhe wound, which was attended to by Dr Leatham, will necessitate the sufferer being confined'to the house for a few weeks.
Speaking at Hokitika on Wednesday, the Premior said that next year the Public Works expenditure would be £200.000, as against £500,003 last year. Captain Voss was present at the Rifle 3 Ball, and was quite lionise! by th j Indies, to whom his little chats about his wonderful voyaee were a most agreeable change to ordinary ball-room gossip.
