The annuil ball of the Taraniki j Rifles tank plice last riigh 1 , and wjs i one of the most tucojegful and enjoy- ! able ever held in tbe long and eventful history of this popular corp>, We 'doubi if the Drill Hall, which was most elaborately decorated foe the ocI easion, eve." look .d so well. T/.e walls ml ceiling wero simply bung wi'.h fldgs asd Ohiaesa lanterns. Ia the centie wora group d the priacip>l Nitional dugs of Eu opo, including the speei il fligs of Englaud, Ireland, Sootland, ai d Naw Za.lauJ. A s">rip of the H»ll was pinitiooel iff, an I a very sinp'.e suppar-rocm, with a very .oani handsomely-furbished diaw-iug-roora up to rtlievd the pressure on the ordinary suppir-ro: m, wh : ch was also very pretti'y dec .rated. The pr icion was ve y highly drcora'eJ, and motica "Hinds uoro« the te" "Our boys tam Pretoria," " liravj Bullor," 11 P«ace, progr ss and pro'parity," "Tie Nival B.igide 4 7," were al-so in evidence,io being eviden'ly intended to indicate the large sSare they hai hid ia bringing about tbe peice, progress and posperity we tow enjjy. Thi Imp.rial c .at of arms, portrait if the Ring and Quaen, the Prince and Princess of Walej were a'so in a p omioent posiian. The olours of the orpa alsj held a very prominent posit'oa. The floor fas in excellent order, and was crowded with a very gay aesamblag >, tha handsome and varied coloured toi'ett.s cf the ladies being all th? more striking whin ia juxtaposition with th) smrlet or kbaki u .iforms of the Volunteew. No prettier or livelier scene has be.'n wit-1 nessed ia New Plymouth thin that at 'th} Drill Hall on Welaesdiy evening, and tne vi iting riflemen from Stratford, Hawera, liglawood, Oiato, Waitira, and Tarata sh:ull hive c rried away the brightest of impressions of this moit euojsfs'ul b »'l, fieir presence at which was a complimmt to the Tarauiki R'fl s, wbioa was greatly appreciated. The presence cf some 400 or more people, and the profusion of J deoration, giva the Hill an unwonted •appearance of g<iij:y, enhanced by the evident enjoyment of nil present. Tte supper was quite in keeping with the occasion, and owing to tbe exce'lant arrangements made for preventing overcrowding, the ojmfo:t of tbe guests wai greatlv p-om>ted. To th j ladies committee, who bad charge of this impartantpirt of the gathering, the heniest praise is du-, n l that th. re was plenty and to spire of all that one ou'd desire in tbe way of refreshments proved how thoroughly well they mmt have worked. The Mayoress (M-a Cock) is eep ciilly to ba cang'atulitid on tha complete success of hor first sociil function since His Worship took office. Not o .ly did she work hard in i agisting tbe committee, but was also! the me ins of giving an added interest to the chi f item on thaeupper-tabla a splendid specimen of the coofec ionei's art, supplied by Mr M<y, in the slnpe of a Prince of WaW birth lay cake, three tiers high —by surmounting the c\ke with the identical flig which orramentcd the DuWa of York's cake at the Piili-.mentary reception to his Royal Highness at Wellington. Io ad.iition to Mrs Cock, the Ladms Committee consisted if Mesdames E, VI, Smith (who is always 'o be found giving r ady and wil fog aid in a good cause), Olark (2), O'D.iscol!, Duller and. Whittiogton, Misses S jlp, Cock, Rowjn, Clarke and Lam bus, all of whom did the r best to ensue the suo cess of the bill, and, what is mor*, attained their o l j ict in view. The Mayor's ene-get c and b jsicess-like services were also grea'.ly appreciited, and if all the gatherings during his term of office are anythi g like as successful as the Rifl s Ball, he will ba able to boast of a record Mayoral y. As 51'5.0., Cip ain Westin, Sirgaant Lister, Corporal Morgan, Private S. A. and E. Humphiies, and Mr A. E,' A, Clarke executed their onerous duties with great cour'esy and aVlity, while the hon. socre'.ary, Mr E. Oiarka, deserve) more thaa mere words of praise for his untieing devotion to the details of the whole affair. The music was supplied by Mr Rowntree's orchestra, and gave that complete satisfaction for which it has justly obtiinly its presant high reputati)D. It was a mrmarable eveat, and a credit t) all concerned.
