FIRE AT ETON
PER PBESS ASSOCIATION. Londov, June 1. The residence of Mr a master of Eton, was gutted by fire early on Monday. Great difficulty was fxperierrel in rescuing th? ir mates, and many brave deeds were recorded. Two boys died from suff ca'ion. One struggled to remove the bars of an upper window until he became unconscious. A large creeper growing in front of the house enabled many to descend to the ground. Mr Kindersley and several others were irjnred The King and Quero are much distressed at the occurence. MARVELLOUS ESCAPE 5 . ATTEMPTS TO FORCE BARRTiD WINDOWS. THE FATALITIES. Received 3,1.8 a.m. London, June 2. The fire at Eton is attributed to a defective flue. Twenty-nine student, Mr Kindersley end his wife and children with 10 maid servants bad marvellous escapes, being rescued from perilous positions. Some of the older windows of the I buildings were barred. Mr Kindersley, who jumped from an upper window, was much buret j about tbe hands and face while trying i' with a crowbar to assist the firemen to , j break the bars cf a window where, j amidst flames, James Heme, aged 13, son of a m°jor in the Highland infantry, could be seen making frantic | efforts to force the bars. Tbe unfort tunate boy was overcame and his charred remains were recovered. Frank Lawson, 14 years of age, grand nephew of Sir Edward Lawson, was suffocated in bed in a back room on the same floor, j In consequenca of the disaster tbe l 'fourth of June celebrations have been i abandoned. Tbe newspapers all protest against ; barred windows being permitted at t schools. j —-
