The Daily News. MONDAY, JUNE 1, 1903. THE DISTRIBUTION OF NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE.
The proposa's of the Honourable the [Prenrer for the distribulion cf New Zealand produca at Home are not land have been discussed agaia and again, and the advisability rfsiuha course it a question upon whi< h colo nisi exporters are generally agreed. Bat the announcement by Mr S ddon that the details ate all arranged, and the fulfilment of the scheme is nowonly awaiting Pariiimentary s.notion, coming as it does on the top of the important delivirjncss o! Mr Chamberlain and Mr Bal four in the Britl.h Hcuss ol Commons on the questien'of prt f erential trade gives the matter an impor;anc« second only to the great question raised by tbem. Once again has Mr. Seddon seized upon the ri-,ht raomont to ravt in the matter. Mr. H. C. Cameron, the New Zealand Prcduca Commissioner, ia cow on his way to the col ny, and should arrive in the court e of a few days. W'hc-n here ha will make exhaustive inquiries into the matter, and it is probable that he will be called to give evideucr) before a Parliamentary committee on the whole question of the dis'ribution of meat in the Mother Country. The Premier states thore is [ no intention on the part of the Government to cut prices or to enttr into competition with exporters now doirg busijness. It is not intended, to compote with those already selling New Zealand meat or to ir.jure or prejudice tbos; supplying from the colony. The term "cost," as telegraphed en Friday, is misleadirg. The market would vary and the prices would have to be charged so as to cover expenses, Mr Oamsron considers that the distributing emporiums would ba self-suupu'tiug. At Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, and Birmingham New Z aland meat isssarc-ly procurab'e, although there bavo roacn a number of prosecu'ions of p.rsona for selling Argentine me*t as Ntw Z} land, "The id'.a ia," said the Pr t mier, " that once we have established emporiums and created a demmd for New Zealand meat in tha c utres io which the emporiums were first established, tha local tradesmen will take 1 them over, and we can shift the emporiums to other cantres. In th 9 course jof a speech at Levin, the Premier referred at eome length to t&e proposa*. He said that, the colony last year lost ovlt £IOO,OOO owing to the intermit'ent nature of tha shipments of meat sent to the London maiket. They rnusS have cool stores in this colony for storing the meat, and they would have to have cool stews in London, cr in some other city in E-og'and, as well, so tint they might be able to feed tha markets regu'a'ly as the Argentine did. There was a Distributing Oimmiwee from the Argentine and from America, and the result was that it fixed the price of every pound of meat that went on the London market. New Zealacd wcu d have to have something of the sane kind, and if that was done they would not be in the hands of a&y companies, and they would get full value for their produce. It might cost seme money to erect cool scores in England, in Wellington and Auckland, and tha South Island, but it would be as good a national assot as they could possibly h:\ve.
