THE OPUNAKE SCHOOL.

Isr an exceedingly inteinpera'e artie'e, ! based on a summatised report of the Tarauaki Education. Board's proceedings, which Hppesred in the Eawera Star, the Opunake Times ssys: —" The whole business smells i f gross johb.ry and sharp practice, and reflects very little credit on all concerned. T iranaki in years past has been shunned by the ] teaching profession as far as possible ' on account of what was known as ".he family ring," apparently with good rea- . son, when its Board goes out of its way as a judicial body to psss over men who have devoted themselves to their profession and proved themselves as teachfrs to coiifcr a favour on a mere stripling. The cHldishness of the chairman is highly amming, when he says in notifying the appointee of Lis appointmeot the Bard reserved tin right to mske a change, if necessary, io the interest of the school. What is the Boird suppos:d to be for? Are we to understand that udossil; had given a qualified appointment it could not make a change, if in the in'erestsof the school." If there was any jobbery and sharp practice at all it was, if we are to by whit ap pearcd in the Opunake Times, en the psrt of those who tried, by legal squabbles, to upset the recommendation of the Opunake School Committee in favour of a ctndidate whom, strange to say, the Board put first on th<* list sent to the committee. As regards the Board's power to make a change, if the editor of the Opunake Times had followed the proceedings of the Mailborough Teachers' Appeal Court case, he would see thit it is excetdiagly limited.
