PROVINCIAL CONEfIKENOE. The following notices of mo' ion have been given to be considered at the Taranaki Provincial Conference, to ba 1 held at New Plymouth on June 18: hj: ADMtNISTBATIOX. Carrington Road--(l) That retired farmers be allowed to j-iio as wtrkiDg mouibirs of tho "Union; (2) that the Executive should have a stcret&ry who sh,ull receive a fixed salary, and who cou'd travel the count/y and give, greater time to Union matters. j TAXATION AND VALUATION. Carrington Road— Tnat on the L-nd Assessment Court on 9 of the assessor* should be appointed by the land-owner. Warei-(l)Thequesiion of imposing Income T»x on co-cperative dairy complies ; (2) to protest agtinst the present inequality of the syttem of assessing land and Income Tax, Opunake —(1) Tnat the Valuation of Lmds Act be amended, so that any aidrional value addei to land by the expenditure of kcal moneys be c!a ; sed as imp-oved value, and deducted from tho rentable value of Crown a> d native leases in the same way ts other imp:ovemen's; (2) trM the Land Tax be abolished, nnd in lieu thereof an Income Tax be sub3ti'ut*d in the same pro porti.n as on inccmes from any other tource. llihotuand Patra West—That this branch urge on theOonf-tonce toinvi-.e the fullest power of the Union to resist the Single Tax.
FINANCE. Eltham—That it be a recommendation to the Provincial Executive to make a universal mono be: s' subscrip' ion of five shillings per merabsr per annum. CarriDgton Road -That the Union have an organising fuul to wLioh sympathisers could subscribe. Inglewood - That in view of the inability of the Government to obtain m.ney from abroad at a reasonable rite, it is durable that the Conferee should consider the question of the State assuming the control of the currency.
LAND TENURE. Lowg ;rth —That settlors in tbe back bl.-cks and unroaded districts be allowed three yeirs'occupation fr<e, af ;er paying first deposit. Waitara—That a'l Cro;vn leas h >lJerp, after five years' residence, be given the option to acqu're the frtenold. Patea West— That all holders of Grown lews be allowed the cpti m of acquiriog the freehold in limited areas, according to the Land Act anl Land for Settlement Ac:. Ngdre—That auotiooeers' fess be pai 1 to county, ins'.eid of borough councils. . Tnglewood—That auctioneers' fce3 ba divided between borough aLd county councils. Oardiff -A strong protest against the unequal representation on the Harbour Board. Inglewood, Opunake, Lowgarth, and Kltham branches to move in somewhat similar direction?. Wjitara—That only bona file ratepiyers be albwed to vote *'. the ekelion cf lecal bodies. Wares to move in the same direction.
G3SEKAL. Waitara—That tho Farmers' Union is strongly ia favour of Mr Kirkbride's Insurance Bill becoming lav?, Uruti—That Government be requested to clear noxious weeds from Crown lands. Manaii—That tbe qiastiou of the administration of the Noxious Weeds Act be considered, with a view if unking i 6 bear more fiMy on the community. Oakura—A protest against any acclimatisa ion society importing deer or other animals to be let loose which might be injurious to the farmers. Lowgirth —That settlers should have the right to destroy aDy imported biids caugho destroyiog his crop) af any lime of the year. Eltham-(l) That tLia Conference desire to support the present agitation in favour of the Government constructing a railway to Mount Egmont for the purpose of sesuring a supply of stone for the different local bodies throughout the provicce; (2) Thas the Small Birds Nuisance Aot be made operative in the North Island.
Warea—That Government help in the maintenance of roads in thote districts where no railways exist to relitve trafhv.
Opunake —That no increase he made on the import duty on farm implements and agricultural machinery; (2) A protest against the present wilful des ruction of valuable timber, and no encouragement given to forestry. Waitara - That tbe Agricultural Department be n quested to have some of the lately-imported stud chiry oattle placed in a central position in this; provicce for convenience of farmers. Oarrington Road—That all Bills af-1 fecting farmers should be forwarded to j thi Colonial O-uecil for their consider-1 atioa before being placed on the Statute I Book. |
Elcham—That this branch considers ihat preferential treatment of British goois is tho most pressirg ques'ion ufteocing the farmers' interest, and urgts the Provincial Execu'ive to U39 every effort iu aerating the Government to biiog such a systam into force.
Ngaire—That the Conference bo to discuss co-operative labour matters, for the following reasons: It is too expansive, slow, and unsatisfactory. Uiverlea-(l) That this Conference strongly potest agairst any preference being given to unionist as agains; nonuni.nht; (2)Tnatthe cost of the adminisfciatnn of the Aibitratioa Act be p iid by th?se using it, and not out of the consolidated revenue oE the colony.
