BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tm Council met on Monday, Present : Bis Worship the Mayor (Mr R. Code), Ore. Wcod, Bellringir, Smith, jfeoekifeg, Collip, Oonnett, Tiecb, Edmonds and Alexander.
Telegrams (rem Dr. Valintine were read re outbreak of imallpcx and as to precautions to be taken; also as to providing a temporary hoepital. The Mayor's reply haß already been published.
Cr. Bellringer protested against the Henoi Befuge being used for a smallpox hospital. Other Councillors a'so objected to a hospital being established in their districts, A letter, from Mr Boy was read as to the insanitary state of the watertable in Vivian-street Cr. Oollis said the matter had already been referred to the Engineer, but he taoved that it be again referred to him with instructions to make a job of it Mid not a patch. Application from W. Webber, M. Webber, and Jessie Webber was read asking for £4O compensation for cutting affecting sections 985-6-7. Or. Brooking explained an arrangement had already been entered into. The latter was laid on the table. A letter was read from Mr Mestayer relative to colonial and imported eiment, and recommending the adoption of colonial cement. —Referred to the Loan Committee. The New Zealand Accident Insur-
ance Company wrote stating terms for •policy of insuring the Council against claims for accident. It was decided that the Council ahould take its own risk. The Engineer reported on Mr BuliotVs request as to Standish's Hill. He had eurveyed the entrance to Frankley-road and reported on the cost. He recommended the contractor for the intake road should be offered
£4O to throw up his contract or £l5O to do the new work. The crusher had been pat in order. The bridge at the mr of the Tsramki Hotel was in a shaky state, fenders for levelling the abattoir site should now be called for. He reported on personß who had not taken oat licenses.—Received and referred to Loan Committee. Hie Works Committee's report was taken aa read.—Adopted. The Bye-laws Committee'* report was taken as read. Or. Alexander withdrew his notice of motioa.
' The reeolution suggested by the OoaoriTa solicitors was adopted. The Reserves Committee's report was taken as read. Or. Brooking asked if the land proposed to be let to Mr. Smith had been advertised. The Mayor replied in the negative. Or. Brooking contended that as others might wish to take the land on the same terms as Mr Smith it should be advertised. Or. Smith was quite prepared to withdraw his application. Or. Collis pointed out that the stiip Was only a road. The report was adopted. The Finance Committee's report was adopted. The Mayor reported having given Instructions for the removal of earth from Aiiki-street and considerei the Harbour Board should be called on to pay tkeir share of the cost. Or. Connett Slid it was a pity ar-1 nngements had not been made with tin Bond when it was in the humour. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. Or. Brooking it quired if there was any plan or title to the gravel reserve. Or. Connett moved that the question be referred to the solicitors with a view to getting it placed on a catisfactory footing. In reply to Or. Alexander, the Mayor stated that the rumour as to the work on Standish's Hill being stopped Was unfounded. It was decided to apply to Mr Webttot for the balance of the promieed Contribution to the work. Or Colli* drew attention to the need of some slight work at Weymouthttreet.—Referred to the Engineer. Or. Collis also brought up the question of the overflow of s'orm water at d silt at Ambury's corner, which he attributed to the sewer being to small. He suggested another pips being put in and taken acrcss the road.—Referred to Works Commit'ee. Or. Bellringer, purcuint to notice, moved that Ore. Connett and Titch be added to the Finanra Committee. Or. Tkch moved that the whole Council be a Finance Committee. The amendment was carried. Or, Tisch withdrew his notice of Motion and moved that the whole of the Council be a Reserves Committee. Or. Alexander seconded. Or. Connett pointed out the curious position the Council ware getting into. The motion was lost. Or. Oonnett movad that the Mayor be aided to the Reserves Committe j.— Carried.
The Council then went into committee.
