AN INFURIATED MAORI.
FXB PBEUS ASSOOIATKW. Makton, May 23. On Friday afternoon at ftata a Maori, mmed K«reopa Ihaka, made a determined effort to kill bia wife with a carving koite. He iiflioted a deep wound in her neck, and then endeavoured to knock bia bftioa out by run* ning full tile ag*irs l . a briok chimney, but, not aucc eding, he attempted to cut lis throit with a knife. The knife was taken away, and he thin made a dash for a tern*hawk, and struck a severe blow on bia head, inflicting a big hole in tho ekull, but this was not fatal.
Surgical ad vie 3 wai obtained from Hunterville, and the doctor says if the wound was a quarter of an inch deeper it would have oeen fatal.
Both were removed to the Wangwol Hospital tbis morning. Kereopa'e wife, though weak from loss of blood, is not dangerously wounded. Oa reooveiy In -will be charged with attempted murder. The cause <f the otsluujht appear* to have been jealousy.
