The Daily News. THURSDAY, MAY 21, 1903. SMALL-POX.

Ik spite of the assurance that thf re is little danger from the inadent that has taken place in the south, the news that the TJpolu is on her way to New Plymouth with s:me of the cargo of thn| Gracchus on board, which the health officer, Dr. McOleland, has been ordered to fumigate, is, to s»y the leas', rather disquieting. This is nob relieved by the order that everyone handling the cargo is to b3 vaccinated. Dr. McOleland is co be comnmdod for the oommonsense suggestion he has mada, that the cargo should be fumigated in Wellington, where the Upolu arrives to-day. Why she was allowed to leave Ly( telton, before the cargo was fumigatul, requires some explanation. It certainly seems strange that this vessel should be allowed to risk carrying the infection to Wellington and Nelson, and bring it on to New Plymouth, j when the fumigation could, have been carried out at Lyttelton, where the i trouble is being dealt with. At Napier the wharf lumpers absolutely refused to handle the cargo of the Talune, which was, therefore, not landed there. We bave no wish to create a scare, but we hope His Worship tho Mayor will support Dr. McOleland in pro'esting against the-Upoiu's cargo being handled her?. We have Dr, Valin tine's authority for saying that small-p?x is more to be dreaded tban the plague, and we strongly protest against any cf the cargo from the Small-Pox stricken ship being landed here.
