General Strike Threatened Unless Government Back Down.

Received 8, 4.12 p.m. Melbourne, May 8. The executive of the Engine Drivers Association, this morning, forwarded a letter to the Commissioner of Railways asking t»bedtfiDi*.e!y informed whether or not tbe had the courage to stand by its orders, as lawful orders, adding, " We presume the Government Bids its legal position unsound and desires Parliament to retrospectively validate its illegal acts. As such an unfair course is- intended, we have to thiok seriously of a step which we hoped to avoid. We have full su'hority towa>n you that you have diivcn us (o tl:<. only course open to u a , and that all our men will csssa work on Saturday ut noon, unlets the orders which the Government have issued are withdrawn by 5 o'clock this afternoon."
