The returns gszstted showing the business done by the Post and Tel 'grapl Department during the quarter ended 31st March las', show increases in every department as compared with the returns of the first quarter of las' year During the quarter the total p>st and telegraph revenue, including Welling ton's contribution of £22,978, wat £141,606, as agaicst £125,046 far th' same quarter of hat year. The number of telegrams received and sen during the quarter was 1,152,658, valued at£4o,B7l,as against 1,043,842, valued at £38,490, for the firs': qumei of last year. Wellington sent out by far the largest number of talegratns, 227,866, Auckland being n.?xt witi 189,823. Th? mon y orders issu during the quarter from 496 olEos was 95,416, covtiring £352,472, am; tht •ruraber piid was 76,566, covering £315,935, a substantial increase upoL the business dona 'during the Sim period of list year. In the cS ; vio»Bink Department tho durint. the quarter (£1,443",835) showed an excess of £94,592 over the withdrawal. The excess of deposits ovor withdrawals during the first quarter of 1902 was £26,884. Tiie total amount of postnl notes sold duiing tho quarter- was £5U,209, as against £43,758 for tin aaue period of last year. I'hu amount covered by postal no'ej paid was £48,450, as against £42,452 for the sajae quarter of 1902,
