THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
To day tha burgesses of the borough of New Plymouth are called upon to maka choice of one of two candidates fothe office of Mayor. There is no great question of policy or principle involved. Jlr Dackrill has fill©d the chair very :ably and beyond the desire for *\ change which always exists in large communities', there seems no reaeon to doubt I but that ho would be again elected.
Even those opposing him are cuiistrained to admit that nothing can be brought against Mr D ckrill to justify j his r« jsction after several years of faithful service. Of his oppon nt nothing bub good need be said. He is in every way fitt'd for the position he seeks to fill, but we quite anticipate that 'ho present Mayor will bi re- 1 flectid as lie has in 1,0 wuy forfeited the confidence of the electors The contest is one of (.how, where two can-' didstes fo suitable are in the field, v>. hich lvgely riepouds on personal p-puhrifcy, therefore ihe sitting mewbei h'B a decided advantage. This is as i should he, faithful service should a'w ys bo the passport to continued co fi ere?. The election of Councillors f- r the Oantial and East Ward promises to be interesting. It is expocted that Messrs Lealan'd and Bellringar will secure re election with a keen contest b3tween Messis S'anley Smith and A. W. Woods. The latter is the more experienced man of the two. but the former has M.o advantage of being better known to the people. In any case, the contest promises to be Very exciting and close. In the Central Ward things are a bit mixed. The three old members have been nominated and Mr Gannett, oae of th<> Kiting members for the East Ward, who was nominated with the idea that Or, Broykiilg did not intend to seek nomination. Under the circurostinces we expect to se<i the three old members r.-turuid. Mr Connett is, however, very strongly eupporttd, and is such a well known and respected public nun that it is impossible to predict tho result with any certiinity. So far the whole election ha 3 baen conducted with tho best of feeling, at the s«ne time a go id rieil of good solid work is bring put in, and wo sh uld not be at su> pri <;d to se'i aU tho candidates very cl'j.-e at the finish.,
