The Council met oo Monday evening. Present: The M yor( Mr Dockrill), and Ors. Carter, Tisch, Bellringer, St.hr, and L'iJaod. Apology for absence from Or. Webstir wy>s received. I a ward correspondence, was read as follows: The General Manager of Railways wrote stating that before cj-ctric bel'S could be p'aced at the crossings it ■vou'd be necessary to appoint crossing - k open 3, otherwise the risk uf accident would be increased. To instil the bells .vould therefore be a very costly matter, which was not justifi id by the taaffi", especially as at the Devon-street crossing special arrangements had be-:rj made to prevent it.— Received. The Patea County Council wrote asking for co operation in pressing on the Governmenta strong protest, agoinss chei- arbitrary interference iu limiting the legal functiors of the contr. ling bodies under the Alcoholic L'quors Ac, ' and pointing out cases in which de ductions had been in respect of charges incurred at elections. —The Mayor sugi gested thit th; question was one which would be batter dealt with by Ihe new Council, and on his motion this course : was agreed to.
