Burgess suggested tba'< the letter should bi lei lie on the table and con tended that the harbour had paid commerciaHy in so much as it had placed extra vilue on all the property in the district many fold on what the haiboui had cost. Or. Dudley add he agreed with the motion as nil those ratepayers who had raturnad him were strongly opposed t> any fur her liability being placed on th-m on account of the harbour, and b* would vote against; any movement in that direction as he did not consider h 4 derived a penny benefit from it. Or. Fleming did not think tbis Council, almost b. fore it was properly on its leg?, should start dictating to o'her local bodies how they should conduct their business. Or. Stevenson said he was opposed to any further rate as it meant a very heavy annual tax on him. The resolution od being put was carried.
