LABOUR MATTERS.
PKB PRESS ASSOCIATION. Auckland, April 22. At the hearing of tbe furniture trade dispute to-day, Mr To'e aiid it was idle to discuss the pr si : ion at common law, as tbe law they were considering was the Arbitration Act, The Court had power to siy, ucder the circumstances alleged in this case, that the men were not to ba discharged. His Honor ashed Mr Tele how long an employer was bouud to keep a fully i competent; man in his employ. | Mr Tola repied that, under 1 ordinary circumstances, he was not, bound to ke p him on at a'l if he did not want him, but was bound to keep him on at the wages fixed by the Court, if hi wanted the man's services. If what had been done in the present circumstances were legal, then the whole Act was useless. The whole thing was a scheme to oust men from employment, and ultimately to render the liw a d u ad letter, Mr Mart-'n replied on behalf of the union, and Mr Cotter for the employers. Evidence was then given by officials of the D.S.°. and others, which closed the case for the employers. Judgment will be given on Saturday.
