FIRE IN DEVON-STREET.
Shortly before 4 a.m. on Tuesday a fira broke out in a shed used as a washhouse a"- the rear of tb<t botrdtng-house owned by Mr Clung, and occupied by Mr aud Mrs Keot, not far from the east end fire station. Fortunately some of the Daily News stuff, on their way hooi'-, noticed the ou'br. and while one rang the bell the others got out the hose reel and took it to the scene of thtcoiifhgi'ation, S:tme members of the Brigade were quickly on the spot, including Lieutenant Boon, and, everything being iu readine j B, the water wjs soon playing on the buruiog building, with the result that all further danger to the house was at an end. Owing to the fiercen3BSof the squ ills, had notth<outbreak b? en promptly attended to, ie all probability the fl »me? would hav. reached tho house, tbe inmates of which wbio iD a most terror-stricken state. | The wind was so strong that the alarm bell was not heard in tbe centre of tbttowD, and one of the improvements in the Brigade system fehoulJ be the provision of telephonic communication a' night from each of the outlying stations to the Central. The present state of the me ins of access to the Eist end thrm bell is a disgrace to the town and should not be tolerated, as it is highly dangerous and involves thewaste of precious moments in giving an alarm. Tho cause of the fire is unknown.
