EARTHQUAKES.
♦ PER PBESB ASSOOUTIOK, London, March 31. A severa earthquake in Jerusalem caused a panic. Slight damage was done.
SEVERE BHOOK IN TARANAKI, About 2.18 p.m. on Wednesday a severe shock of earthquake was felt in New Plymouth and the adjoining districts. Apparently the disturbance travelled from south to north. After a preliminary tremor there came a severe shake, which set orn.iments, lamp l , pictures, clocks, and other artic.es on the move. This was succeeded by a still sharper shock whi'h dislodged many light articles on shelves, damaged chimnies, ani effctei other dirlocibioos. As ustnl there was a wild rush of the gentler s°x fnra their domicile*, cattle aud biids being also much disturbed. The undulations noticed by pedestrians and persons engaged on the land, the elf ct beiug to cause, in several cases, a feeling of nausea, The vibrations lasted for nearly 30 seconds.
In the fancy gnods shops and at the chemists some damtge was done, but not to so great an extent as by the shock experienced soma time ago. In the (South-road area several were again damaged, and this w s the CIS 3 also in other plac-is. Miffc Emily Rennell and Mr 6. George bad a very narrow escape of s rious, if no 1 ; fatal, injury through twe dislodgemsnt of the central smi circular ornament; from the top of Mr Hennrll's office in Brougham-street. This massive piece of solid woodwork fell with a crash between the above named, a detached portion striking Mr George, but fortunately no' inflicting much injury. It was m'irvollous that either one or b>th should have < sciped, and they are to be ccngratulattd on thoir good fortune.
The Daily News' Normanby corr- spondent wired as follows :—" Extremely heavy earthquake felt here at 2,13 this afternoon, Listing 20 to 25 seconds, direction about north and south."
Inglewood, April 1. A very sharp shock cf earthquake was experienced at 2.17 p.m. Eltham, April I. One of the heaviest earthquake shocks ever f«lt here was''experienced at 2.15 this afternoon.
Haweea, April 1. Tbe sever:st shock of earthquake felt here was (xperienced st 2,18 this afternoon, lasting about 50 seconds. No damage is reported.' Wellington, April 1. A smart shock of earthquake was felt in this town this afternoon at 2.15. Palmerston North, April 1. A sharp shock was felt hjre at 2.15 p.m. to-day.
