Wa have to acknowledge the receipt of fin interesting leaf!. 4, which has just been issued by the Acting RegistrurGeneral, dealing with the rrsult of tbe licensing p ill in November last. He Siys tbat 148,449 votes wore recorded in favour of continuing existing licjrses —including onedistrict, that of Olutha, where the vote (1368) was for restoration of the licenses candied at the poll aken in 1899—132,240 for reduction, a> d 151,524 for no-license (including 1245 votes cast for non-restoration in the Olutha district). In twenty-cine of t he six y-eigbt licensing districts tbe majority of the voters was in favour of continuance, in twenty-four no proposal was carried, in niße reduction, and is six no-license wag carried, but in two of these latter the poll on petition was declared invalid. In twenty-four of the districts—Marsdeo, Grey Lyjia, Franklin, Thames, Waiapu, Napier, Pahiatua, Hutt, Waitaki, Oamaru, Waikouaiti, Kaiapoi, Avon, Lyttelton, Courtenmy, Selwyn, Geraldine, Timaru, Oavsrshatn, Taieri, Tuapeka, Wallace, lavercargill, and Awarua - a majority of the votes polled was for no-license, but not in sufficient number to make up the threefifths required to carry tbat issue. Of the total number of persons, 318,859, including those whose rote* were informal, 180,294, or 56,54 per cent,, were men, a«d 138,565, or 43.46 per cent., were women. Compared with the [polling im the year 1899, this shows a numerical increase of 19,335, or 12 01 per cent., on the part of the men, and 17,702, or 14.65 per cent., on th® pirt of the women, clearly showing that the latter are now taki»g greater interest in local option matters than they formerly did.
