FIRES.

Per Press Association, Napier, March 13. A fire was discovered in the roof of 'he freezing chambers at Nelson B-os. freezing works at Temoana about 5.30 this evening, and d-spite the efforts of the emp'oyees, who operated the hose fixed at the works, the fire soon spread, and the buildings seemed likely o be comp'e ely destroyed. The refrigerating machinery was stopped, and steam got up in the engine which is kep*; on the premises, buI', 1 ', as the fird was gaic irig ground, a messiga was sent !o secure the ass : stance of the Hastings Brigade, which arrived arout 6 p.m. The fire had by this time cr. pt along n«arly the whole of the roofir-g, but, after an hour's hard fighting, the fire was got under. Subsequent inspection showed that although the rorf of the refrigerating room was completely destroyed, the pumice insulation had saved the building, A large quantity of wa k er soaked through into the chambers, which were nearly full of frozen mutton, but this will not cause much d image, -*s the refrigerators were set wo: king to freeze the water into ice. The hose kept on the vvoiks was found to ba of insufficient lorgth, so that little could be done until the arrival of the Hastings Brigade. The fire is supposed to have been ciused by a spark from the engine chimney, as was the case on former occasions.. The amount of damage cniiot ba ascertained at present.
