WHANGAMOMONA NEWS.

(From our Own Correspondent.) Oor local cricketers visitod Furangi re cently, and the Puraugi team returned the compliment last Saturday. Our men were successful in both essays The visitors were hospitably entertained by the locals.

Our metalling is proceeding but Blowly. The contractors have had to resort to the old style of brick kilns. These produce good metal, but the work is necessarily slow.

Our annual sports will be held on the 13th March, in Mr E. Jennings' paddock. On the evening of the sports a ball will be held in the Kohuratahi Hall, which is expected to be nearly completed by tint date. The Sports Committee consists of Messrs H. R. Bennet (chairman), D. Wildermoth (secretary), T. Ryan (traas* urer), Wallace, McCormick, W. Hodge, Woodney, Bacon, M. Slattery, Grey, Hill, and Groves. Handicappers(open events) H. Kivell, (local events) J. Groves; judges, E. McCormick and W. Woodney. (Crown Lands Commissioner) and Barron (Ranger), recently visited this settlement, and were much gratified with its progress and prospects. On the Blh February about 50 settlers met the Commissioner at the Tahora State School. Mr T. E Anderson presided, and voiced the feelings of the settlers as to the desirability of laying out a township near the junction of the lihura tahi and East Roads ; also the establishment of a public Recreation Ground and a pound. The Commissioner expressed himself as strongly in sympathy with the movement. He requested the settlers to forward requisitions on these matters to the Land Board, and promised to use his influence to secure a favourable consideration. Arrangements are being made for a banquet to our local Member, W. Symes, Esq , to be held in the Town Hall on 20t h March. The Hon. the Premier was approached in order to secure his attendance, and he promised that either he or [ Sir Joseph Ward would attend.
