The Daily News. THURSDAY, MARCH 5, 1903 PROPOSED DAIRY SCHOOL.
If the question of the locality of the North Island Dairy School is to be reopened, the local bodies throughout Taranaki should lose no time in putting in a claim for having ir, located in Taranaki. The Waoganui Chronicle tvider.tly thinks the whole quos ion op*n for discussion, and says ::—"Pulmurston may be the centre of a large agricultural area, but it osn lay no claim to beiDg the centre of the North Island dairying industry, This distinction assuredly appertains to Wanganu', for no doubt Taranaki is the home of the dairying industry in New Zealand, and the whole of the country right from New Plymouth to Wanganui is being devoted to dairy farming. If, then, the Government wish the school to be of any value as an educational factor, it must place it in the most central position. If the school is not located in Wanganui, the Government will fail in their purpose to make the school the great educational factor they hope it to ba. It j behoves our local association to leave no stone unturned to urge upDn the Government the claims of Wanganui as a locality for the erection of the proposed fchool." The absurdity of the Chronicle's contention will be apparent to every one We believe amongst dairymen Strat ford is recognised as the most central position for such an institution. It U easily accessible from north and south Taranaki. The Stratford— Whacgamornona railway will bring it in touch with the enormous area east of the \railway, w! lie students from Aucklar.d are within twelve hours by steamer of a school there. There are doubtless somo local jealousies to overcome, hut if thete are put on one side for th;general benefit of the Provincial District, and an united effort made by all parts of Taranaki, we believe a thoroughly wdl-cquipped school would soon betfitablisbed, which would ptove of incalculable bench's to the | dairying industry, an industry which it is acmit.tod is further advanced in T.ranaki than in any part of New Zealand or, indeed, anywhere outside < f D umark. We hope no time will be Lst in moving in this matter, no that this gre-it advantage can be secured for Taranaki, which, as the Chronicle very truly says, is the homo of the industry,
