THOROUGH TREATMENT OF ALL SUBJECTS.
' Thk technology of science is, to the general reader, a hedge of thorns. No dictionary ever did more than to leave him pricked and perplexed until "The Century" showed its comfortable gate ofAccess. The. thorough treatment of all subjects related to physics and mechanics is one of ~ the most original features of "The Century." The traditions of the eighteenth ■ century seem to have affected all the other lexicons ; and the old belief that applied science is no better than " glorified plumbing " pervaded the field of lexicography until the editors of "The Century" made a new departure. The modern reader cannot heap up ,*■ technical glossaries; he must have one dictionary for all purposes. He ma; not ; need more than once a year to. ascertain L the meaning of a technical term, but when he does need that definition he rit arally wishes that it should be full and accurate. ■ Until 'The Century" was published, he oould not hope to find such a definition , unless he possessed a work of reference devoted exclusively to the one subject, ' and few men care to buy a book in order f to nse it once a year. To most readers, the want of such a work as The Century Dictionaiy and Cyclopedia and Atlas has not explicitly asserted itself, because they have not j formed the habit of ''looking up" the various questions, which present them■elves from - day to day ; but when that excellent habit is once formed, "The Gentury" becomes indispensable. _ One has only to turn to the cable page of a great daily paper to see the numerous calls made on the reader's general information—one must keep in touch with current events, and ,- The Century" enables one to do this. The Times offers this library of 10,000 pages for a preliminary payment of 10s. Ask for the Prospectus sent free on application by post.
