NEW PLYMOUTH COUNCIL OF THE CHURCHES.
A special meeting cf the Churcb . Council was held on Monday evening - in the Presbyterian Lecture Hall. The Rev. S. Osborne presided, and (here were present ministers and re- ' present&tfves of the various churches. - It was reported that the deputation, appointed by the Council at its last meeting, had interviewed the President of the Licensed Victuallers' Association ~ to ascertain if a contest could be avoided by the voluntary aoceptanca of ten (/clock as the hour cf closing. The following letter bad been received from the President, Mr James Paul, in reply "At a meeting of the Licensed Victuallers' Association held yesterday, I duly placed tbe suggestions made by you on behalf ot tbe Council of . Churches before the members for consideration, and they unanimously were ~ of opinion that 11 o'clock being a fe reasonable hour for closing the hotels, * suitable to the requirements of the general and travelling public, and more conducive to the better observance cf •' law and order, it would be unwi.-e to make any alteration in ths present .. arrangement.'' In view of this attitude of the - Licensed Vic'uillers' Association it . was resolved to bring out five candii dates, who would pledge themselves to r 10 o'clock licenses. The Council further ro.s-lvej, that in • the event of the ho'e.'s being closed at ten o'clock, tbe Borough Council be respectfully urged to limit licanses grarited to billiard rooms to 10 p.m. | A resolution of sympathy with Dr. £ Peokes, who is a member of tbe Coun |: cD, was then ctrried wi'h muGh ftelinj, K the meeting closed.
