EXPENDITURE OF THIRDS.

WARNING- TO LOOAL BOMBS. At the last meeting of the Land Bjird 1 a word of warning went out to the j Local Bodies with regard to the expeu- ' diture of the thirds and fourths of i rentals in terms of the Ltnd Act. The point arose in connection with i tbe Olifcon County Council proposing \ to spend thirds for back block sections . situated on side roads in the Tongipwutu District, on instilling some 30 chaius of the New Plymouth-Te Kuiti , Roid near Uruti. The Commissioner remarked that it wis lime enough to take the thirds for metalling the main arterial roads when *!1 the settlers had a cart road to th ir holdings: many of them could barely get; a pack horse to their sections. The Board concurred in thii view and the pen went through all the proposals, except of course, for the sections dirtc'ly interested, tbe Commissioner even demurring to this on the ground that tbe thirds were never intended for metalling main roads. The satt'ers in back blocks, moreover, have very of tea to coatribute to special rates as well as > ordinary rates, and complain bitterly 1 that they do not receive any benefi ' in the shape of road expenditure, witb- | iu a reasonable distance of their h jld- : >ngs.
