At present the bank's shares w<re bringing £4 11?, though he could not understand the cause of the rite. There were some wh> said that there should be a State Bank which should stars withthe Bank of New Ze thud. Others said the Gove'nm j nt, in goiog behind the bank, should retain control of it, even tLcugta bank's liability to the colony was met. Thirdly, there were three who though'; the am uit sub.scribrd by the colony as a guarantee should ba converted into bink capital and the colony should be to that extent a partner in the bank. He said this with a two-fold object —first, to let the colony know that baoking legislation was necessary, and secondly that if th re was any bosm in its shares, people would know thit the matter was to be dealt with by P»r'iamf nt. If «bey dealt in &ha>es t hey wonld do so with their eyes open.
