He had been cashing them freely, and had £167 in gold when arrested. ! Leighton's proper name is Norman . Campbell, and he has a brother in the 'same bank as Maclagan (the defaulting clerk) was employed, j The detectives believe that the whole ' thing is a conspiracy, and that the prin* cipal has not yet been arrested. | When Maclagan was captured, he said that he had intended to leave by the Ophir j last Monday, but Jones did not turn up with his ticket as arranged. | Leighton also acaused Jones of playing him false. | Leighton took a company for a tour of the goldfields, but it had a disastrous financial career.
