There was a large attendance for the first day—about 25 percent, more than last year. The publican's booth was under the able control of Host Clarke, of the White Hart, whilst the catering was under the charge of Mr West. Passing the stand for the second time Wai--1 wera had the advantage, but half « mile from home Rufus came up, to ba afterwards displaced by Eclair, whilst Waiwera fell back. Coming luto the. straight, the battle Royal was between Eclair and Miss Drury, and after an exciting struggle the latter caught the judges eye by a h'ad, Waiwera a length away third.
