Bearing in mind that these times correspond roughly to 4 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. on January 13th a 1: thi Society Islands, it is probable that the devastiliug tidal nave r. ported iu the cable was due to the earthquake. The centra of the seismic disturbance is some 75 degrees from New Zealand which, supposing it to be in the direction of these islands, would pbce tha seat of the earthquake about 5 degrees north of the equator, and about midway between the S .ciety Islands and the Coast of Mexico,
