GREAT LOSS OF LIFE. | PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION. San Francisco, February 10. A wave forty f :ec high deluged the Society Islands, The captain of the Mariposa estimates that the fatalities number from 5000 to 10,000 peopl?. Two French warships and one Italian warship are conveying foad to the Islands, Christchukch, February 11. It is interesting to no'e that on January 13th, from 1.36 to 5,17 p.m., a large earthquake w./s being recorded at tho Ohristehuroh Magnetic Observatory. Bearing in mind that these times correspond roughly to 4 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. on January 13th a 1: thi Society Islands, it is probable that the devastiliug tidal nave r. ported iu the cable was due to the earthquake. The centra of the seismic disturbance is some 75 degrees from New Zealand which, supposing it to be in the direction of these islands, would pbce tha seat of the earthquake about 5 degrees north of the equator, and about midway between the S .ciety Islands and the Coast of Mexico,
