THE INFLUX OF AUSTRALIANS.

The numb jr cf Australians who came to this colony in 1902 was greater than in any previous year since ! 893 —the year of the bursting cf the land boom jin Melbourne, and the consequent failure of banks and mercantile institutions on every hand. The arrivals in New Zealand from Australian ports in that year was 22,351 souls, out of a total of 26,135 from all parts of the world. Af er 1893, and up to 1901, the arrivals fro-n aud departures to Australia p.o'ty nearly ba'aticed each other. The arrivals ware 1894, ( 21,291; 1895, 18,573; 1896, 14,125; t897, 14,799; 1898, 14,969; 1899, 15,529; 1900,14,565; 1901, 19,923 ; 1902, 22,526. The arrivals from the United Kingdon in 1893 numbered 2929, and the dcpjrtures for the Old 'ountry 1583; the numbers for last year being 3±74 and 1497 respectively. Che excess of arrivals ov*r departures for each y-ar of the ten was : —1893, 10,412; 1894, 2253; 1895, 895 ; 1896, 1472; 1897,2752; 1898,1696; 1899,1 1887; 1900, 1831 ; 1901, 6522; 1902,1 7992.
