OBITUARY.
I HON. W. ROLLTOTON. j Per Pre s >n. Ashbdrton, February 9, | The Hod. W. Rolleston died at his 1 home at Rangitata l.st evening. The Hon. W. Rolleston, son of the late Rev. G. Rjl'eston, for many yeus rector of Maltby, Yorks, was born in 1831 and educated at Rossill and Cambridge, where he graduated with classical honours. His clonial cueer commenced in 1858, when he settled in Canterbury, where he did goad service in tho nau e of educaticn, and also filled the offices of Provicciil Sarre'ary and Superintendent. Subsrqumtly he was appoint ei Undersecretary for Native Affairs. He first became a member of the House in 1878, and from the following year to 1884 was a member of the Ministry. He succeeded he Hon. J. Bryce as leader of the Opposition in 1891, but twoyea»s la'er failed iu his contest for tha Ellesmere seat. He was returned for Riccarton at the following el-c ion, but th : s was his last victory at the poll. Hi leives a family of five sons and three daughters,
