A NON-COM'S MISTAKE.
Three popular subalterns in an equally popular corps that took part in the Mounted Rifles camp at Makarewa 188$ week, were (says the Wyndham farmer) subjects of an unrehearsed indignity one evening. The orderly sergeant for the day was a somewhat green " hand, but energetic withal. He was detailed by his captain to furBish three men slick and smart for fatigue duty. Off he went, and espying three m-n in close conversation he told them they were to appear at once before the offi.er in question. The trio, of course, promptly obeyed ; and on the energetic sergeant apprising his captain that the men were in waiting, the non-com. was given his orders—to see to the carrying cut of some menial work about the camp. This led to some " langmge" outside the tent, and on the officer stepping outside to ascertain the causa of the ferment, he nearly exploded with laughter. "Great aeavens, sergeant, what are you about? Woucjou know that these gentlemen are L'eutet ants , and . of the Mounted Rifles?" The sequel of incident is to; fit for publication.
