r A BOY WINNER. WELLINGTON BINDSMBN ILL. R1 PRESS ASSOCIATION. Mastbbtoh, February 6. The result of the E Flat horn was:— S. Mellor (Wsihi) 92 points, 1; A. Jones (North East Valley) 89 point", 2; W. McKersey (Denniston) 87 points, 3; D. Epproff (Southland) 86 _ points, 4 ; O. Forrest (Wanganui) 80; S. Blythe (Waeganui) 75 ; W. Nicholson (Wellington) 72; T. Bauchope (Kaikorai) 70; O. Yeoman (GUborne), 70; H. 0. Strong (Hawera) 69; D. Whalen (North East Yalky) 69; H Hnll (Wellington) 56; A. Williams (Hauraki) 40. The winner of this solo is a mere boy, thirteen years of age. He is the son of the conductor of the Waihi Band. When the result was read oat, the audience insisted on the little fellow baing brought on the stage, and accorded him p-olocged applause. Mr Old Hume expressed extreme surprise on seeing who the winner was and warmly complimented him. He remarked that the boy wis a fine specimen of the musical youth of New Zealand. W. Smith, bass player in the Wellington Garri'on Band, was taken seriously ill on Wednesday evening. He is suffering from severe hemorihage of the lungs and is in a critical condition. A seating of the Executive of the Bind Contest Committee is being held to consider a compltintby the Wanganui Garrison Band to the effect that the judge informed the Wellington men of the result of the test selections played on Wednesday evening, this being contrary to ths rules.

North East Valley 234, Denniaton 231, Masterton 229, Southland 216, Woolston 210, Waihi 196, Hauraki 191, Buahins 164, Taranaki 162, Palmerston Worth 149, Hawera 144, Gisborne Oity 136. Points were given for tha Btsson shield as follows: — Wellington 289 4-5, Wanganui 2871-5. Prizes and medals were distributed afterwards, Wellington" taking .£IOO first prize and Bs*-son shield, Wanganui £SO seond, Kaikorai £25 tiird, j North Eist Valley £ls fourth, Den-, niaton £lO fifth.
