HIGH SCHOOL GOVERNORS.
The Boird met on Friday. Present: Mi ssi's MacDiarmid, Roy, Wilson, Priroy Smiib. F. P. Duckworth wrote relative to giving driil instruction. It was decided on the motion of Mr Percy Smith, s-condod by Mr Wilsin, that Mr Duckworth be erigiged as diill instructor for the p esent term. Tin l.eadmaster, Mr Piidbam, repo teJ ihit the following pupils wtre entitled to and had accepted fr*e education at the H'gh School during tho coming year:—L S-irpel l , L. Maudm, L. Blauchwtt., E, Qr;»n r , F. O'Brien, I. Mice, F. Perry, S, Thomson and E. Mac\ The following had accepteJ provisionally:—B. Ford, Q. Russell, S. Griffi h°, N. Percy, and M. Bobnts.
B. Ford, junior scholarship ended Detfember, 1902, gained fourth phej in the ser ior scholarship examination with 73 per cent, of the total marks. M. Roberts, free tuition ended 1901, gained fifth place in senior fcholarship ex-im nation with over 70 par cent of possible marks. G. Russell's junior scholarship ended Dec:mbtr, 1902, gained six'h place in seoior scholarships examination wi'h ovm 1 70 per cent of po-siblo marks. F. Gi ffitbu, junior scholar ship, ended Dec inber, 1902, had qualifi>d for a 86nior s.holarship. N. Perry's frea tuition, eadeJ December, 1902, had qualified for seuior scholarship. If free tuition ware granted to all these tho rrquirad number of 14 free places will bi exactly filled up. Las'year tberj were 51 pupils paying fes, and this year so far there were 66, wi'h a prospect of on ? or two mora -a gain of 15, or roughly £9O per annum. Ho also applied for certain apparatus required. 15 was decided that free scholarships be granted to the 14 pupils mentioned in the Headmaster's report; that fiv» double d-sk«, seven drawing board J , three dozen inkpots, sixtaen pairs of clubs, and the note s*ry Lumber of easels required b; provided.
Messrs MacDiarmid and Smith were a committee to allot the 15th schohiship. The Education .Board notified the isarce? of pupils who had won ecbohrships, 1 Mr T. S. Weston wrote resigning his seit on the Board, and thinking the members for the ciurtesy and kindness shown to him. -The resignatio'i was acceptad with regre\ and Mr Weston is to ba thanked for his services. The appo : ntment of a successor was deferred till next meeting, as nil the members were not. present. M.r J. W. Foate's request for a reI bate of fees, owing to removal, could not be entertained. ! The monthly balan?e-she»t and the yearly balance-sheet (unaudited) were read. Accounts were ptsaad. The appointment of chairman for the ensuing yoar wis deferrel till next me ting. [s was to urge the Department to reply re'ative to the free scholarship questions subrn'tted the Board for the Department's ruling. The Bsard rose.
