POLICE COURT.
Friday, February 6.—8 fore Mr R. Stanford, S.M. A EACING TRANSACTION. George A. Iletd, of Foxton, was charged with the theft of a racehorse called Wefca, belonging to a Maori named VVi Kingi. Mr Quilliam prosecuted, and Mr J. E. Wilson (Wilson and Grey) defended accused. Ic appe ired frcra the evidence of Wi Kingi that in December, 1901, he leasad tho horse to defeudaut fort>velv<i months, and that at the expiration of the lease tbe horse had not bien returned, and Wi Kingi could not get pos-ea-ion of it, defendant seating that it was at Gisborne, but that he could not afford lo go up aud get it, Mr Quilliam tried to produce oral evidence th it Waitara was agreed upon as tho place where the horse should be returned to, but tbe S M. ruled the evidence out.
His Worship ruled that defendant had m case to answer, and dismissed the charge, allowing defendant's solicitor £1 Is costs. He said it was a case for a civil action. VALUELESS CHEQUE, Robert Ibell was charged with obtaining £5 5s from Jacob V. Kurta, a | rest mrant keeper, by means cf a valueless cheque. On tha application of Sergeant Hadjdrell, a remand was granted till Monday, bail being allowed. Mr C. H. Weston appeared for accused, ALLEGED THEFT. Llewellyn Pries was remandei to ETawera for breaking into a schoolhouse at Matapau and stealing a gold chain and locket v.ilued at £2 12s 6d. Leslie J. Hardgrave, who had been ordered to pay 3s a week towards the support of a child at tho Industrial School, applied to h ive the order remitted owing to h'"s inability to pay the amount. The arrears were stated to amount to *£& Is. His Worship adjourned the matter far three months
