LECTURE ON FIJI.

Ora of ihe most interesting and instructive lectures ever heard in New Plymouth was given by the Rev. W. Slade, ob mission life in Fiji, in the Whiteloy M morial Hall on Monday jeTMing. Notwithstanding several other attractions, there was a good attendance, the building being well filled. Those who were so fortunate as to hear Mr Slade on - Sunday evening anticipated a treat, and tbeir expectations were mere than realised, as Mr Slade is, if passible, even more success ful on the lecture platform than in the pulpit, having great command of 1 languige, and a vast fund ef anecdote and humour. la eloquent language he vividly described the hislory of missionary effort in Fiji. Those who rheught the pr*gr«gs made was slow did not, he said, realise the difficulty of dealing with people wbo, breaking every commandment in the Dtcalogue, did it in peif c; innocence of wrong doing. Mr Slade's description of the natives, their history, their habits and social customs, was exceedingly entertaining, interspaced with many humourous anecdotes from his own experience, while his description ef Fiji and its seenery wu a delightful piece of word painting, which will long liv* in the memory of his heareri. The chair was ably filled by Mr Wkitaker, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Rev. W. Slade, at the dose, for his interesting aud exceedingly instructive lee ur«.
