The Daily News. FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, 1903. AN IMPORTANT INDUSTRY.

Those who hive f.equented the Police Court during the proceedings in connection with death of tho unfortunate man Ince, must have been strucbrwith tbe growth of the fishing industry at Moturoa. From a very small beginning, two or three men and a boat or two, quite a fleet ef boats and a considerable number of men are now employed. Tha industry is, however, still in a very precarious eondition a< d need of organisation. Want if capital, ar.d tbe systematic disposal c f the fish ob'ained, render the icdustiy much less satisfactory than it should be. Although a vast improvement has taken p'ace, it is still either a feast or a ft mine, and the ordinary fisherman is-not getting the resul s he might do if the industry were properly organised, In many places, not nearly so favourably eituat d as New Plymouth, a company is foi med, markets are exploited, thoroughly efficient boats or trawlers are fouod, and competeot fishermen are steadily and permanently employed, and tbe spare fish tinned, smoked, or otherwise made use of. As a-d : s'ributing centre New Plymouth is unrivalled, while the fishing from the Sngar Loaves to Kawhia is said to be equal to any p'ace in the colony. It seems to us tint some effort should be nuade to gather in "the r harvest of the ssa" when the oppjrtuuities are so great as ia this case. The capital required is only comparatively, small, while the supply of tho raw nnterial is abundant. If New Plymou'h is to become a large and important place, every efiVfc muß t b-) made to develop indus>rie°. Take away our dairy industry *nd Taranaki would be in a very bad way, because die rd are no other industries to fall back upor. Every effort sb< uld be made to aid and foster thy development of any industry that will employ labour, increase our expo.-ts, and generally improve the condition of te people.
