WHICH IS RIGHT?
The passengers from OneVunga to New Plymouth by the Northern Company's steamfr Ngapuhi had a thrilling experience list Friday moraing. Owing to the very thick weather, and tre heavy downpour of rain, it was impossible to sae the lights at New PI) mouth breakwater - , consequently the steamer ovinran her distance by 10 miles. About this time the weather cleartd isomewhat, when the first object seen «as tha company's wrecked steamer Gairloch, right ahead of the Ngapuhi. The distance between the two steamers appeared to be about only 100 yds, but of course it wis greater than that. As soon as the position of the Ngapuhi was realised, the was at once beaded out to sea, end a course s'eered for New Plymouth, where she arrived in safety, but too late to connect vtith the express train for Wellington.
Regarding the paragraph in the ' Herald of yesterday ag to the Northrrn Company's steamer Ngapihi having narrowly escapfd goiDg on thore ntar j where the Gairloch was wrecked, we are assured that the Ngahuhi was never in any dang-r on the occasion. The night was very dsrk and stormy, and the lights on the breakwater at New Plymouth not beiDg visible, CapCaptain Norbury pui the steamers head out to sea for some time, and was never within three or four miles of the place where the Gurloch was wrecked.
