The ma' oh between the Taranaki Rifles and Guards took place at the local ranges on Thursday, in splendid weather. The contest was carriei out in a most friendly spirit, shooting conditions being very favourable, although the heit was somewhat tryi-g. Tbe Faranaki Rifles and Guards went into crnp at the Recreation Grounds ou Thursday, there being 42 of each company present. The Garrison Band was al<o present in full strength, Tho first muetvr was for tea at 6 p.m., and at 6.45 the rnon were I inspected by Colonel Ellis and then jdismiised, so as to enable them to get their ten's snug for the night. It is to be hoped that tbe tents proved watertight, otherwise the heavy rain which fell after midnight must have s-rioualy inconvenienced the-e in camp, i la addition to Colonel K'lis, who is in command, all the staff officers, including Surgeon-M «j »r McClelland, were present. The RifUs were in charge of Captaia Wtston and Lieuitea&nt Okey, the Guards being in 'charge of Lieutenants Holmes and M.essenger, Captain Cook being absent in the South Island. A new departure has been mide this year relative to the catering, which is now b?ing attended to by the companies thtmselvea instead ef by contraot. This should give them a practical insight I into actual conditions of military camp I life. J Parades will be held night and morning. On Sunday there will be a .Church Parade at 10 15, at which the I Fire Brig<d? will also be preient and Inrrch with the volunteers to St. Mary'd Church.
