COAL FAMINE IN WINTER.
SUFFERINGS OF THE POOR. PBB FKBSB ASSOCIATION. New Yjrk, January 14. The-coal famine in the United States, combined with the bitter cold, is cinsing much suffering amongst all classes. Seventeen people have been frozen to death in Chicago. The Ways snd Means Committee of both Homes has reported in favour of granting a rebate on imputed coal fer one year. * The "operators" (mine owners) agree to snppy the New York retailer* with coal at fva dollirs a ton if the retailers will sell to the poor at ten cents per pailful. Mr Mitchell, secretary to the Goal Miners' TJaion, has advised the Anthracite unions to increase the production until the weather moderates.
