TARANAKI BRIDGES PROPOSALS.
——• I 04RRIED AT THE POLL. lOn WcdaesJay a poll was taken on the proposals framed by the Taranaki County Council for raising a loan for reneniag bridges under their jurisdioion, and it is satisfactory to find that he ratepayers were sufficiently alive to thdir own interest to carry the proposals. The County chairmao, Mr H. Okey, is ti be congratulated on the success cf his eff irte, for he ip .red no pains in explaining the advantages of the schi>me to tbe ratepayers in every part of tbe district. Toll-gates will now be abolished and permanent bridges capable ef bearing the heaviest traffic will r.pi«cs unsafe wooden structures. The only substantial opposition to the scheme came from the Waitara Riding and Ok-ito, tbe Moh Riding, with the excep' ion of Egmont Village, giving almost a block vote in favour. Only about two-fifths of those on the roll went to the poll, A m>jority of thrj.-fifths of those who voted requisite for carrying' the proposals, a<id it will be seen that this was obtained with over 100 to spare.
