WRECK OF THE GAIRLOCH.

A Daily News representative was at the scene of the again on Wednesday. There ia, however, little to add to our previous report. At sunset the vesai-l was still hard set ou the rocks, but with an an increased list sea ■ wards. In conversation with ths young man Mace,.whoclibmej on board J our representative ascertained that the lights were found to ba burning in the | cabins, and that evidently holds had; bsen torn in the lower par; of the ship. The sUvage effected on Tuesday included the ships electro silver, linen, and upholstery, spirits etc. The " Thomas King " was not permitted to go out to the wreck on Wednesday. Possibly there might have been no danger in her making the trip, but should an accident have happened to the dredge, the position of mutters so far as continuing the important woik ia the harbour would have b<en so serious, that the risk could not be permit'ed.

Mr Rauson, Manager of the Northern S.S. Company, arrived here on Wednsday morning and visited the wreck. He returaed to Auckland in the evening, and will send from there such further instructions as to salvage operations as may be decided upon. A preliminary inquiry, not open to the press, was held by the Collector of Customs, Mr Bedford, who took the evidence of the captain, officers, and crew of the Gat-loch, which will bs submitted to the Minister of Marine, who will decide as to the holding of a Magisterial inquiry. The Giirlooh's cargo included 306 bags of sugar for Opun^k l , 2891 bigs and 20 sacks of 6Ugar for Wanganui, 10,400 feet of sawn kauri, drain pipe?, two carriages and eundiies.

The rumoured narrow escape of a collision between the Ngipuhi'and G*itloch, which, on the bis 1 ; authority, we deoied yesterday, will doubtlvss be one of ths matters elucidated at the inquiry.

The change in the weather which occurred on Wednesday overling will, it is feared, hasten the immediate breaking up of the ill-fated vessel.
