In regard to the selection of the band and its proapec s, Lieutenant Herd says: "In making the B.lection I wish it to be dis'inctly uadirstooi that three good playes lost the chancee of bpiug inoladed in the band owing -to th»ir unwillingness to pHy subordinate parts. I am sorry that Mr W, S. Kiug, bandmaster and trombonist, of Oimaru, is unable to make the trip. Yhe qnestion of character, combined with npeoial musical ability, has '>ei» very serio isly consHsred. AH thing" consider d th* band is a very strong on", aud with diligent p»ctcs for * four weeks, prior to leaving the colony, and with six weeks practice on the way Horn*, should do honour to New Zealand." Mr D. McKinnon Brio, of New Plymou'b, wi 1 act Jas manager of the band and accompani'-s the band Home. Mr G. W. Wilton, ef Wellington, whi has accepted the pest of secretary to the bind during its tour,"is'not only a highly capable for that positoo, but is also a >killed musician. An offer has already been made by a London enthusiast to take the band through the United States on their return journey t> New Zealand, but ' nothing will be arranged till the combination retches England.
