ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
rea PBK3B ASSOCIATION. Waipawa, January 5. An aged Maori chief named Hewi Turopu was burned to death on New YVar'a Eve at Kairakou through his whare accidentally matching fire. Only bis legs and arms were found, the body being consumed. Hawiba, January 5. James Rober'son, schoolmaster at Rowan-road school, who has b9en muariog since Sunday, 21st ult, was found in the bush at Upper Manaiaroad with the arteries in his neck severed. At the inquest, held at Kaponga, a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned. Dsceased, who was 38 years, and singlp, held his late appointment since January,. 1902. He received his training at the Duncdin Nermal School and acquired a D Certificate. Previous to coming to Taranaki he was engaged as assistant and head teacher at various schools in Otago. Wbstpokt, January 5. A miner named Kennedy, about 60 years of age, was discovered dead in his hut at an old digging at noon to-day. He had bled to death from an apparenty-s If inflicted wound in the arm. Deceased was understood te have been an officer in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Gisborbe, January 5. The eldest son of Hugh Heeney, aged thirteen, was drowned in a water hole to-day. He was out wi'h his three brothers and two brothers named Griffiths, all younger tban himself. They lioked on while he went in for a bathe. He got into deep water, and, being unible to swim, was drowned. Dunkdih, January 5. 'An inquest was held to-day at Kaitaogtta into the death of Wm. Roger*, whs hid his neck broken from a fall while wrest 1 ng. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, no blame being attached to Bowman, the young man with whom deceased had been wrestling. Wslliitotoh, January 5. A seaman named Francis fell from the fore-top-gallant yard of the barque Lett9rewe to-day, alongside the Queen's wharf, aid was killed instantaneously. The body of the man found in the harbour yesterday hat no 1 been identified. At the inquest to-day a v-rdict of found drowned was re'urned. Papers ware found on the body bearing the name of Har.is.
