Tne Londcn eo're-pnrider.t <f tie New Zepland Herald, writing on Aprik< 25 b, give- a • very interesting account of the oßßc'rl opening of a test consigr ment c.f < ggs sterilised by the p''ocrts invented by i Mr Ellis, of Stratford. The egg 3in question were co'lec ed at Nelson early in February, and after beiog treat d by Mr Ellis were picked, sealed with the Government sea', and shipped as! ordinary cargo, baiog placed in the holl with geuerdl goods, and, as it turned out, near the bunkers. The seals were broken on February 220 d by Mr Cameron, New Zealend Produce Commissioner, and it was Lund that the eggs were in the condition claimed by Mr Ellis. So satisfactcy were the contents cf the box that invitations | wht9 at one* iesu> d to the Press and (authorities in the trade to see for themselves what Mr Ellis bad achieved. Dr. B<.ddell, the food expert, was also present. Prior to the t?st Mr Ellis stated that he ODly claimed to be able to keep 90 per cent of the eggs, but out of a score of these cr chad, cocked and eaten, there was not one that was not in pes fee' condition. Mr Meadows (through whosa bands tens of thousands of eggs nr« constantly passing) applied the yolk separating tea*-, and pronounord th» result as "sp endid—simply wonderful. A gnat success." Dr. Riddell stated that he also hac been experimenting in the s*me direction, but tbe eggs he had treited coulc not; be pu"; alongside tho»e dea't with by Mr Ellis. Every one present wst fully convinced that the tests wen •atisfactory in the fares; ssnse, With regard to placing the eggs or the market, Mr E'lis explained that the cost of sterilising and cirrying eggi from New Zealand to London would be about a Id a dozen, and th*t as at the time when tbo scarcity of thie commodity was greatest in London tbe supply in t 1 e colony was plentiful and cheap, they thsrt fore could be landed in England when the demur, d was greater. In addi ion to this, all present at the demons'.! a 1 ion agreed that there was a splendid market for eggs in Sou h Afiioi. The L'aily Mail, in referring to the subject, i-aid : -"A revolution in tbe egg trade may pos sibly enfue is the nsulfc of the discovery." There is no doubt but this <"s so, and tbe poultry industry will grow into enormous dimensioi s if this nsw process provi s the ''' ■ 1 <■o v s it appears. The Home market aUoida a go;d and pi onoient marks t for all the eggs New Zealand can produce. Further inFormnti n will be locked for with g eat int. rest. in particu'ar should | largely profit by Mr Ellis' succ ss. |
