At the Thames Police Court on Saturday Cyril Douglas and Jas, Edgar were committed for trial for breaking and entering the Waihi Keduotion Works and stealing gold slimes to the value of £7OO. Bail was allowed, £IOO and two sureties of LHO each.
Mr Caldwell, who visited this coloriy at the beginning of the year, was defeated at the South Australian general election, while Mr Price, leader of the Labeur Party, wno was through this colony in June-July of last year, managed to retain his sett by a narrow majority. Mr Darling (father of the famous cricketer) headed the poll for the Torrens district with 8796 votes, while Mr Price, who was the last of the five sucoesstul candidates, polled only 7172. , Ratepayers who are anxious for informs- j tion regarding the proposed Borough loan, which the cheese-paring policy of the Oounci! prevents our supplying, should demand a full explanation at a meeting of ratepayers to be held, we understand, to-night. The ! Council evidently thinks the less publicity given to its proposals the better chance of their being carried. When the proper time comes we shall take care that no proposals ar« carried without proper publicity. Kenny, the Burnharn boy in the hospital at Christchurch, showed a slight improvement on Saturday.
Constable Stackpoole resumes duty to-day after a lengthy spell of sick leave. The Finance Committee of the Melrose Borough nouncil urgently requested Mr Bpencer (engineer-elect for New Plymouth) to re-consider his resignation and the Council was willing to grant the necessary increase; but Mr Spencer, although satisfied with his treatment Wy the Oouncil, decided with rsgret.in view he greater Wellington scheme, to sever oonnoctioo with that Oouncil. It is evident, therefcie, that Mr Spencer intends coming to New Pljmonth. A girl named Ella Polley, age Jls, was admitted into the Auckland hospital suffering from an overdose of chlorodyne. The chairman of the Auckland Charitable' Aid Board, in reply to the Governor's criti-1 cis-ms on the management of the Costley V Home, contends that the pitienta la the. The chairman will move at the naxt meeting of the Board that the charge for Imperial pensioners he reduced to 7s 6d.
