BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting *f t ; e Council was held on Friday iv> ni'-g. Preseat: The Mayor (Mr D.;eknii, in the chair), Crs. Oonne't, t.low, Leal&nd, Collis, Carter, Tic en, Webster, Stohr, and Brooking.
The Borough Solicitor wrote in reference to the Council's seply to the Couuty petitioners' objections to the propo-ed loans for the erection of the Henui bridge. The M «jor suid the commmittea in charge of the matter "greed with the alterations suggested by the solicitor, except one in whiuh he suggested that that the Borough Enginwcr should inspect and leporo on tbe site. It would, at least, be three months before the engineer would be able to mike a report. The whole matter would in any case be reported upon by the Government engineer?, so that there would ba nothing gained by waiting for the appointment of the borough engineer. Mr T. K. Skinner wrote withdrawing his name from cbe list of applications for the position of borough engineer. Mr Coad wrote drawing attention to the state of the Borough Council's yard in Gill-street.
Cr. Brooking said there was certainly some reason for the complaint made, but the Council hoped shortly to remedy the trouble when it had got the yard in'o proper working order. The following committee reports were read:
The Works Committee recsmended: That a gas lamp be erected near the 0 corner of Powderh&m and Mt. The Health Committee 1 ded : That instructions be issued to the ' Inspector of Nuisances to make a house 1 to house visit throughout the Buiough, and that should his demands ba not complied with immediate action be . taken against the offending parties; that Mr Hopkins' letter re nuisance in ' Gover-street ba referred to the Inspec--1 tor. —The report was adopted, Cr. Lealsnd thought the Council 1 would be in pocket if it let, a contract for the removal of sand in Mol-sworth-stmt, as similar work was g' ing on I there.—The Mayor said provision was I maw'e for the work in the Estimates, i The Council then proceeded to special i busiuus.
