Wellington, May 20. j Official returns received by the : Health Department show that there ihad been 114 cages of plague in New South Wales during thu present outbreak up to 3rd May, aud 56 cages iu Queensland to 26ih April, There w«re 30 deaths in New South Wales and 16 jiu Queensland. On 31st March, 1901, there wera 170,593 dwellings in New Zealand, ( f which 153,782 weru occupied, There wero 45,499 dwellings if three and four looiuc, 52,585 of five and six loams, aud 36,542 containing more than «ix rooms. The cumber of persons to th« square mile in New Zealand iu February, 1871, was 2-456 ; in i M«ch, 1901, it wns 7 - 427. The number of females to 100 ur»l*s in the colony in Decemb-r, 1858, was 76*41. The ratio showed a steady d.;creas<) f .ir : the succeeding twelve yeaia, but has 'grown since 1870, and cow stands at 90'33,
