THE RETURNING TROOPERS.

On Saturday afternoon the Mayor (Mr E. Dockrill) received a telegram stating that the troopers returning from South Africa would not arrive till Monday eveaing. Mr A. C. Fookes received a wire to the same effect from his son. There was, however, a big crowd at the railway stition who were greatly disappointed at tho non arrival of tho men. To-night a battalion parade of tho local corps takes place, aud it is expected they, with the band, will march to the station to meet the returning men. It is not certain how many are returning to New Plymouth, but Trooper G. Fookes, one of the heroes ■at Bothasberg, Trooper Ellis, son of Colonel Ellis, aod probably 'Prosper Ewns, of Irglewood, will beamougst the number. It is expected that Colonel Banks, several other Auckland officer?, and the Auckland (section of the Sixth Regiment will be on the train en route for Auckland. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. Ashbuuton, May 18. At the reception of Captain Tucker and returning troopers on Saturday night there was a largo crowd. On arrival of the train they were met by the mayor and escorted by the band to the At cade, whew speeches were m<de by the mayor and several leading citizens complimenting Captain Tucker on his distinguished services. A binquet iwas held afterwards, which was well attended.
