PER PKES3 ASSOCIATION. Received 18, 5.18 p.m. London, May 18. A correspondent of the Manchester Guardian says Lord Hopetonn's resignation is due to the S ato Governor actively trying (presumeiy instructed in the name of the authorities)'to mould the opinion of their respective States so as to bring pressure on the Federal Government and Parliament especially in tbe matter of defence. He adds that the Govtroor-Gareral position is intolerable and impossible while the Statfl Governors have equal access to tbe Imperial authorities.
