FOOTBALL.
STAR I. v. TOKAPA I. This match was played in the Recreation Grounds in wretched weather. The ground was in fair order considering the amount of rain that had fallen dudng the list few days, and a fairly lirge crowd wi f ne?sed tho contest, great interest being token in the gam<\ Star eventually won by nine points to three.
Stroud kicked off for Star, Oallaghan returning to Richards (Stur), who kickrd out noar his own 25 fl-'g. A free kick to Tukapa for a Stir forward handling the ball in the scrum. Mynott kicked out soon after. Jenkiason getting the ball from the scrum passed wildly to Mynofct, wbo failed to get his kick in, and Star took the play to their opponents' end, Tukapa being penalised for off-side play. The bill was placed for Stroud, who made an unsuccessful attempt at goal. After some give and take play on the line, Allen got the ball and passed to K. George, by whom it was transferred to Callander, who scored a splendid try near the Corner flag. Stroud made a good but unsuccessful kick at goal. After the kick out Jenkinson secured a mark in a good position, and placing the ball for McKnight, that player rmde a good kick at god, Cullender forcing. From a line out Holdsworth got the ball, kicking it over tha heads of his opponents, but Ridland, failing to take the, ball, St'\r looked like scoring. How-! ever, Moray (Tukaps) came on the and securing the ball he was 'orceu over hin own goal line, a scrum being ordered five yards out, Tukapa cleared their line, Star were not long in bringing the p'ay back again, and getting a free kick in a guod position Stroud piloted the ball between the uprights. Star .. .. .. 6 Tukapa .. .. .. 0 Mcknight kicked out, and after some give and take play about the centre of the field the play was taken to Star's end, the ball going out at the coiner flag, The ball not being thrown out straight a scrum was formed fiEteen yards out, and Star forwards by a combined rush took the play to mid-field. Here Smith (Tukapa), trying to pick up the ball, collided with Oallaghan (Tukapi), and the game had to be stopped for some time. It had baidly been resumed when another breik occurred owing to Gorringe (Star) having the misfortune to slip and break the small bone of his ankle. Smith also retired, not having recovered from his injuries. Clow went on in Gorriuger's place, and Bruce took Smiths. After resuming, Star took the play t;> Tukapa'send, and the bill going out Billing cleverly worked the " gap," and the ball going to Callender, that player crossed the lino with two or three Tukapjs holding on to him. A try being awarded, Stroud again made a good but unsuccessful kick at goal, the ball going over the uprigh*. Half-time was called shortly afterwards, the score beingStar .. .. 9 Tukapa ~ .. .. 0
M. Knight kicked off for the start of the second spell, and both sides made the game very willing, the ball travelling up and down the field at a fast rate, neither side gaining much advantage till Callender got the ball and, eluding the Tukapa's backs, ran to itidland, who broushi him down in firstclass style. After a scramble the ball went to Allan, who pissed to K, George, who was grassed before he, got far. Stars wars penalised forj one of their forwaids handling the j ball in the scrum, Tukapa clearing, their lines with the kick. Tukapi! now livened up a bit, and t ik- j iDg the play to the Star's end gave j their opponents a warm time in defending their line. Eventually, Jen-' kinson getting the ball, pasted to My- ] nott, that player transferred to Morey, j who ran to the Star line and passed to Callaghan, who scored near) the corner fl>g, Sadler was entrustrd with the kick and made a good attempt, the ball going over the upright. Tukapa were still playing a good game, and the ball being kicked to Brucp, that player looking dangerous until gwssf d bv George. The play now raged on Star's line, and Jenkinson tried hard to gr-.t through, but found the defence too strong. Tima was called soon afterwards, the play beiDg in midfield, and the score j Star .. .. .. 9 Tukapa .. ~ .. 3 For S ar, Richards, Allan. " Fatty " J George, and Callander were the p'ck ofj the backs, and of a very even lot of for-1 wards Holdsfforcb, Billing and Stroud . shone out.
For Tukapa, Ridland, Mynott and Jenkinson wor« the best of the backs, while Lovcridge (2), Sadler and Standish worked hard to nave defeat.
Mr G, Symo was retires and Lis decisions gave the utmost satisfaction. Met-SiS Stohr (Tukapa) and A. Humphries (Star) were line umpires.
At Inglawojd Star First Juniore defeated Inglswood by 3 to t:il. Sn ati'ord Second Juniors.jourr.oyod to Inglewool, but the IrcaJ team did not turn up, so SHrutford kicked oft' and claimed tho gmrie.
